O'Neil was a contestant on her third series of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 because of the judges' excitement in her performance. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were shocked by the results and advised the viewers to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil's performance was so consistently good, that he didn't fall in the top 3. Judge Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner from this year's Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and youngest in show history, following the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
